On Thursday 24 April, Law students from The Corby Sixth Form took part in an exciting and highly educational mock trial at Bedford Magistrates’ Court, competing against students from The Bedford Sixth Form.
The trial, presided over by Judge Anthony Abrahams, centred around a negligence case involving a road traffic accident, based on a real-life scenario.

Outstanding performance
Representing the parties on both sides, students argued their case with impressive skill and professionalism. While Judge Abrahams ultimately ruled in favour of the claimant—represented by students from The Bedford Sixth Form—he also recognised contributory negligence, which led to a reduction in damages.
Despite the result, The Corby Sixth Form students were commended for their outstanding performance, demonstrating excellent advocacy, critical thinking, legal reasoning, teamwork and public speaking under pressure.
The day began with a guided tour of the courtrooms and holding cells, providing students with a broader understanding of how the legal system operates in practice.
Student Ria shared her excitement about the experience:
“My experience at the court was brilliant as I got to have an insight into my dream career as a lawyer and I am very grateful for the opportunities provided by The Corby Sixth Form and the excellent teaching quality in every Law lesson.”
Sherelle Clarke Teacher of Law and Sociology, praised the students’ efforts:
“I was so proud of all the students during the mock trial — they spoke with confidence, applied their legal knowledge brilliantly and showed real professionalism throughout. The experience provided them with valuable insight into the complexities of a legal career and the skills required to succeed in the field.”
Student Samuel reflected on his personal growth during the event:
“It was great to get some first-hand insight into legal practice by competing with The Bedford Sixth Form, as I got to put my theoretical knowledge of the law into practice with my friends. Prior to yesterday, I lacked confidence with my formal and speaking skills, but getting to speak out loud as part of the defendant’s legal counsel really helped. I’m now looking forward to developing those skills even more.”
Exploring aspirations
This mock trial provided not only a taste of real courtroom procedures but also a platform for students to explore future career aspirations in Law.
Events like these showcase The Corby Sixth Form’s commitment to providing enriching, real-world experiences that prepare students for their futures.
